Visiting Newlyn

Newlyn, a cultural catch not to be missed…

You may know Newlyn for its busy harbour and the fishing community that’s based here, but don’t let that fool you into thinking that’s all we have going on!

Yes, Newlyn’s busy fishing port is the town’s backbone, with it said that for every one job at sea, six are created on land. However, this active fishing hub has a lively collection of restaurants, pubs, galleries and independent shops running alongside, calling out to be explored.

Newlyn has long been famed for its links to the art world, the renowned Newlyn Art Gallery is a must-visit for any art lover, with an internationally recognised contemporary art programme that is well worth a look. With exhibitions from regional, national and international artists, you can quite easily while away a few hours being inspired by its offerings.

If films are more your thing, then head to the newly renovated Newlyn Filmhouse, one of Cornwall’s only independent cinemas. The renovated former fish merchant’s building shows the best in mainstream and arthouse cinema, and serves up some pretty delicious food in its café. We love the ‘no crunchy’ food rule in the screens which means your cinema experience isn’t hindered by all that popcorn rustling!

Your inner foodie is sure not to be disappointed in Newlyn, whether you are looking to sample the fresh fish that is brought into the harbour at Mackerel Sky Seafood Bar, or The Tolcarne Inn (headed up by chef Ben Tunnicliffe) or you want to pick up some supplies for the rest of your travels at Newlyn Cheese & Charcuterie. Of course, a visit to Newlyn wouldn’t be complete without a trip to the famous Jelberts ice cream parlour to sample their delightful creamy vanilla ice cream – they only do this one flavour, but ask any local and they’ll tell you it’s the best in the world!

And if it is really something different you are after, why not escape the world of technology and gadgets and get some friends together to head down to Cornwall’s Great Escape Rooms. A brilliant concept, you get 60 minutes in these rooms to combine your problem-solving skills and intuition in order to break out. They’ve assured us that you don’t need to be a genius to work out the riddles!

So get planning your next trip to Newlyn and see what treasures you can find in our charming Cornish village beside the sea.
