North Pier Upgrade

North Pier Upgrade

As part of Newlyn Pier & Harbour Commissioners’ (NP&HC) ongoing maintenance programme, Newlyn Harbour’s North Pier is being upgraded.

Having identified several areas of subsidence and substandard surfacing at North Pier, the first phase of a resurfacing project will commence from Monday 26th June 2023.

As a consequence, North Pier will be closed to all vehicular traffic for approximately six weeks.

“We apologise for the inconvenience caused but this resurfacing is necessary not only to ensure the resilience of Newlyn Harbour’s infrastructure but also for reasons of health and safety,” explains Newlyn Harbour Master & CEO, Jonathan Poynter.

“We have provided harbour users with early notice to give them sufficient time to make alternative arrangements and thank them for their cooperation throughout the planned phases of this enhancement project, which will take place during the next 12 months.

“As a Trust Port, we reinvest any surplus revenue for the benefit of harbour users and the wider community, and NP&HC is wholeheartedly committed to investing in Newlyn’s infrastructure to enhance and preserve it for the future.”

Newlyn Harbour is one of the largest fishing ports in England and is the gateway to some of the richest fishing grounds in Northern Europe, a port of refuge for vessels that fish the Southwest Approaches, and the last port of call before the Isles of Scilly.

As well as continuing to invest in ongoing maintenance programmes and the development of the Newlyn Harbour estate, NP&HC has an ambitious vision to support the fishing industry by improving infrastructure and upgrading facilities for both the catching and processing sectors.
