Newlyn Pier & Harbour Commissioners Welcome Christmas Lights Switch-on Event Posted on December 2, 2024 at 3:35 pm. Newlyn Pier & Harbour Commissioners (NP&HC) are looking forward to welcoming Father Christmas and the people of Cornwall to the 2024 Newlyn Harbour Christmas Lights switch-on event, which takes place this Friday, 6 December from 6pm. The event is organised by Newlyn Harbour Lights, a small group of volunteers who work tirelessly all year round to ensure that the historic Cornish fishing village is festooned with festive illuminations, and the Commissioners are proud to support it, in partnership with Penzance Town Council. Newlyn School Choir will perform outside Newlyn Harbour Office from 6pm and Penzance Silver Band will lead carol singing throughout the evening. Father Christmas will arrive onboard the RNLI Penlee Lifeboat, Ivan Ellen, at approximately 6.30pm, led into the Harbour by Pendeen Pilot Gig Club in decorated gigs. Every child will be given a raffle ticket and the lucky winner will help Father Christmas and Mayor of Penzance, Cllr Stephen Reynolds to switch on the 2024 Christmas lights display from the Harbour Office balcony. A spectacular hybrid firework display by Sonic Fireworks will then follow, with quieter effects at the beginning and a gradual transition to traditional, high-octane pyrotechnics for its dazzling conclusion against the backdrop of Mounts Bay. “It is our absolute pleasure to support the brilliant Newlyn Harbour Lights team who work so hard throughout the year to deliver this festive event for all the family,” comments NP&HC’s Chairman, Paul Durkin. “It is a privilege to be at the heart of our local community and to welcome Father Christmas himself to our historic port.”
