Newlyn Pier & Harbour Commissioners Launch New Plan for 2019

Newlyn Pier & Harbour Commissioners Launch New Plan for 2019

With a new year comes a new opportunity for Newlyn Pier & Harbour Commissioners to review their plans relating to the future regeneration of the Port.

Against the backdrop of Brexit-related economic uncertainty, the Commissioners have taken the decision to recalibrate their investment in the Port’s infrastructure by focusing on improvements to the harbour environment that will bring quantifiable benefits to stakeholders and are more likely to be achievable in the current climate than longer-term, larger-scale development.

The Commissioners have therefore decided to withdraw their funding bid to the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) under the EU Structural and Investment Fund (ESIF) Growth Programme 2014-2020 for part-funding of a project that aimed to develop high-value employment in the area.

This would have been achieved by maximising useable space; improving the public realm; screening off industrial traffic, and constructing a number of high quality industrial units to replace harbour buildings on The Strand.

“Whilst we have worked hard to capitalise on opportunities to bid for the final rounds of European funding available to Cornwall by tailoring our strategic development plans to match specific funding criteria, we feel that it is in the public interest to constrain development to a smaller-scale investment in improving the user experience of the Port’s facilities and services at this time,” explains Harbour Master and Chief Executive Officer, Rob Parsons.

“In the pre-Brexit rush to respond to European funding opportunities, we have been as transparent as possible within the confines of challenging timescales, but some stakeholders have felt that our information-sharing has fallen short. This new plan provides us with an invaluable opportunity to pause, reflect, listen and learn to inform our decision-making in the future. To that end, we have agreed to establish a Newlyn Stakeholder Group to help us hone our operational plans for improving car parking and storage, establishing a chandlery and enhancing facilities for fishermen and fishing-related businesses on North Pier. We hope to revisit our broader strategic plan in the future as new funding opportunities emerge but in the meantime, we shall look forward to delivering a series of smaller, operational improvements that will benefit our hard-working fishermen.”
